Equipment

What do I use? It doesn’t matter.

What gear should you use? I can’t tell you that.

I’ve moved between different systems so many times that it’s starting to get difficult to remember how many and why. I’ve looked at gear lists on the sites of photographers I admire. I’ve watched countless ‘What’s in my bag’ videos.

What I know now is that from a general technical perspective, it doesn’t matter which system you use. You will achieve the same results with most systems, at least with the level of camera that you're looking at, if you are reading this. In my opinion, the design and ergonomics are as important as the technical specifications.

If you enjoy the design, you will use it more.

If the ergonomics fit your hands, it will be easier to use, and you will use it more.

So far, I have used Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, and Olympus/OM Systems. There are elements of each of these systems that I love, but none that fit perfectly.

Personally, I would like the sensor, image quality, tilt viewfinder and dual-click functionality of the front and back dials of the GFX 100ii, the speed, reach, and versatility of the Nikon Z system, all wrapped up in the ergonomics, ruggedness and weather sealing of the OM Systems OM-1. Unfortunately, I’ve been unable to find this camera, so I’m currently using the Nikon Z system, which is a good middle ground for the style of photography that I’m doing right now.
